Visit the magnificent Winterbourne Medieval Barn & marvel at the cutting edge architectural techniques used in 1342 to create the beautiful raised-cruck roof, ‘a magnificent example of the builders’ craft’. Explore & talk with friendly tour guides.

Winterbourne Medieval Barn, built in 1342, is a unique surviving example of a great medieval Barn built by a gentry family. Constructed using green timber methods, it’s estimated that as many as 240 oak trees were used to build the main roof structure. Winterbourne is believed to be the only surviving example of a medieval barn of this size that was built & used by the lord of the manor rather than by the church.
Set in rural South Gloucestershire, just outside Bristol, the main barn & grounds will be open for you to look around at your leisure with some of our volunteer tour guides on hand to answer any questions you have about our beautiful site.
We will also have documents on display from our archive which show elements of the architectural process of restoring The Barn to its former glory during "the big build" which took place between 2019 & 2022.
Our pop-up cafe will also be open serving a small selection of drinks & snacks. Cash & card payments are accepted.
Why not combine your visit with a trip to St Michael's Church next door? Check their listing for times.
We are also located next to Monks Pool Nature Reserve which makes The Barn an ideal starting point for exploring the local landscape.
Look out for the brown signs on Winterbourne High Street to direct you to The Barn & follow the pink bunting to the entrance! Limited car parking is available onsite (BS36 1SE). We have plenty of cycle parking or The Barn is a ten-minute walk from Winterbourne High Street.
