Wivenhoe Memories Exhibition

The exhibition draws on the 'Wivenhoe Memories' collection of the late John Stewart, a dedicated local historian who amassed thousands of photographs of Wivenhoe over many years. He used to hold an exhibition of these photographs every year and following his death in 2018 this popular event has continued. The theme of the exhibition this year is 'The 60s', a decade which saw major changes in Wivenhoe. The establishment of the University of Essex at Wivenhoe Park in 1964 was followed by the construction of its first buildings in the fashionable Brutalist style of architecture. The arrival of the University contributed to Wivenhoe becoming the fastest growing town in Essex in the 1960s. At the same time Wivenhoe saw the closure of the 'Upstream Shipyard' in 1961 after almost two hundred years of operation. As well as photographs, there will be extracts from a variety of documents, including old newspapers, on display.
