Women of Lowestoft High Street and Below: A Walking Tour
The Lodge, Belle Vue Park, Yarmouth Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk, NR32 4AL
There are already plaques in Lowestoft (old) High Street celebrating some of the women who have lived and worked there but there are a number of other individuals and groups whose stories have yet to be marked. This walking tour will point out some of the women who are already well-known and those who are not. It will start in Belle Vue Park, walk along the High Street, down one of the Scores and on to Whapload Road finishing in Sparrows Nest Park - home to the Maritime Museum where the history of the fisher girls can be further explored. The title of walking talk - the High Street and Below - hints at issues of social class and will highlight the different lives and experiences of those living on the top of the cliff and those below it. This will not be (and cannot be) a definitive list of women of Lowestoft High Street and Below over time but will bring together information from different sources and in different eras. If you can add to 'women of the High Street and Below' or introduce us to someone previously unknown then please come along to share and to help develop this project.
The tour guide (Susan) is part of Suffolk Women's History Network that is promoting women's history across the County. In November we hope to put on a 'study day' at Lowestoft Museum where we will spend time looking at its collections and gathering information about Lowestoft's remarkable women and their activities which have contributed much to the history of our Town.
