'Women walk into history': A walk around the centre of Sheffield that retraces a local women's history walk first held on 15 July 1984 , organised by the Sheffield Women's History Group .

'Women walk into history' was the headline of an article about the Sheffield Women's History Group walk by Sheffield journalist Clare Jenkins, published in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph on 16 July 1984. The article goes on to describe walk participants '...50 people, mainly young women in post-hippie Greenham attire..' and 'some of the places, people and organisations linked to Sheffield women's struggle for a voice and a vote in the previous 100 years' included on the city centre walk.

Fortunately, at the time, the Sheffield Women's Printing Co-op produced a guide with details of the route which I managed to track down on eBay. So our walk will retrace the steps of this historic event in Sheffield history, first held on Sunday 15 July 1984.

We will meet outside the Fargate pub and the walk will begin at the top of Fargate and end at the Women of Steel statue outside City Hall, a distance of about a mile. We will walk along some city side streets behind the Anglican cathedral, which can be uneven and steep, so could be difficult for people with mobility issues. The route should be accessible to people in electric wheelchairs or mobility scooters so long as they can cope with the hills. The walk is completely outdoors so please bring sunscreen and a hat or umbrellas and waterproofs depending on the weather forecast
