Working by Lamplight with Matt Sayers
Sat 12 Sep
National Coal Mining Museum for England
Project Space Gallery
Exhibition runs: 18 Jul – 20 Sep
Step into the glow of a miner’s lamp and experience the coalface as artist Matt Sayers does. For Heritage Open Day, Matt will be in his exhibition Working by Lamplight, drawing under the same low, focused light that once illuminated the underground world of miners. This unique approach allows him to recreate the atmosphere, restrictions, and intensity of working below ground.
Matt’s work is inspired by the mining drawings of Henry Moore, as well as the powerful visual traditions of mining artists including Tom McGuinness, Harry Hicken, and Margaret Boulton, whose works are held in the NCMME collection. His drawings capture the physicality, rhythm, and humanity of mining life, shaped by the very conditions in which miners once laboured.
Join Matt on Sat 12 Sep, where he’ll be on hand to talk with visitors about his process, influences, and the stories behind his work. It’s a rare chance to see an artist at work in the environment that inspires him.
