Working Lives

Compare and contrast the working lives of ordinary, rural Swindonians in the 1800s with residents of our modern-day town.

Acclaimed writer Richard Jefferies was known for his eloquent prose about nature and wildlife, but he was also prolific about the lives of working people in Victorian England. What was a 'day in the office' like for manual and agricultural labourers in Jefferies' England, and how different are they to our working lives today?

Visit The Stable at the Richard Jefferies Museum to experience his words in a setting that feels made for Heritage Open Days.

Accessibility details

The museum is set in an old (listed) farmhouse, Richard Jefferies' birthplace. We have endeavoured to make the location as accessible as possible, but please be aware that the age of the site means there are uneven surfaces throughout, so as much care as possible should be taken. The museum building itself is a three-storey building, but the display is located on the ground floor in one of the outbuildings.

Additional information

Well-behaved dogs on leads are always welcome at the museum. Children should always be supervised by their responsible adult.
