Woven Threads & Living Memories: The Malaysian Diaspora in Coventry

This event invites visitors to discover the everyday heritage of Malaysian families living in Coventry through a small exhibition, hands-on activities, food and music. It explores how ordinary household objects, recipes and cultural practices carry memories of home while evolving within a new place.

The exhibition will feature meaningful objects from Malaysian-Coventry households, including the Tikar Mengkuang (woven mat), Batu Lesung (pestle and mortar), Telekung and Pelikat. Visitors can learn about the stories and everyday uses behind these objects and how they remain part of contemporary family life.

The programme will include opportunities to sample Pandan Kuih, make Bunga Rampai potpourri and take part in traditional heritage games. A live pianist will provide traditional Malaysian cultural music, creating an informal and welcoming atmosphere for conversation and cultural exchange.

The event is designed for local residents, families, students and visitors interested in Coventry's diverse cultural heritage. Members of the Malaysian Coventry Society will be present to share personal stories, answer questions and introduce visitors to aspects of Malaysian culture that are often experienced privately within the home.

Through these activities, the event highlights the contribution of Malaysian diaspora communities to Coventry's cultural life and creates opportunities for intergenerational knowledge-sharing, participation and connection.
