Come along to find out more about Crewe’s railway heritage, working on the railways and tracing your railway ancestors. You’ll be supported by a series of short talks from experts, and stands where you can ask us your questions!
At this railway and family history fair you can learn more about Crewe’s railway history and find out how to trace your railway ancestors. Four experts will give 20-minute talks during the afternoon (repeated in the evening) to help you understand more about the town’s important railway heritage. The presenters will be available to discuss all things Crewe, railways and family history with you – so come along with your questions!

Crewe - A railway town by Di Drummond
This talk will look at the foundation, building and growth of Crewe – and in particular its reliance on the railway, from 1843 to the present.
The London & North Western Railway and its staff by Reg Instone
This talk will look at the London & North Western Railway Company and its staff, helping you to find out more about those who worked for the LNWR.
On the Wrong Track: Railway Work & Staff Safety in and around Crewe by Mike Esbester
In this illustrated talk I’ll discuss what working on the railways in and around Crewe and its Works involved in the period before 1939, including some of the dangers of railway work. I’ll introduce the Railway Work, Life & Death project, which will help you find out more.
On the Right Track: Tracing Your Railway Ancestors by Margaret Roberts
This talk explores the various methods and resources available to trace your railway ancestors, from employment records to census returns; learn how to access and interpret historical sources.
