Guides will be on hand to show visitors the outstanding architectural and historical features of this jewel of a building. The perfectly preserved ancient church is thought to have been founded by Saxons as early as 850, and was subsequently rebuilt by the Norman family of de Braose, Lords of Bramber. See the spectacular carvings on the tower arches c 1140, a screen dating from 1300, links to the Armada and the Titanic in 'Sea Corner', Victorian and modern stained glass, try to find the cat and the mouse and then watch the rolling slideshow of Old Shoreham in days gone by. On a delightful site close to the River Adur with its wooden Toll Bridge (dating from 1782 and still in use), opposite historic Shoreham Airport and next to the 16th century Red Lion Inn, a visit to the church can be the centrepiece of a great day out in the beautiful Adur Valley. Refreshments will be available from 10-12.30, so even if you already know the church, drop in for a coffee (tea or soft drink) and Len's delicious cakes.

Access Information
Apart from the raised area in the chancel the rest of the church is flat and at ground level. Access to the toilet from inside the church is through a narrow doorway, but wheelchair users can reach the toilet by entering through a wider door on the north side of the church, which is just opposite the toilet.
Additional information
The beautiful peaceful churchyard of St Nicolas is also worth a visit. It has several Commonwealth War Graves, and others who rest here include Amon Henry Wildes, who with his father designed most of the building which give Brighton its distinctive appearance, and Lydia Yavorska, Princess Bariatinsky, whose dramatic life is the subject of a recent book.
Directions
Please note that there is no vehicular access to St Nicolas' Lane from Steyning Road - entry for cars is from the Upper Shoreham Road.
