Over 50 countries across Europe take part in the joint initiative by the Council of Europe & European Union. Each runs the festival a little differently but all aim to bring you new, often exclusive, opportunities to explore our fantastic heritage. This year the European theme is 'Heritage & Architecture: windows to the past, doors to the future’.

Northern Ireland – European Heritage Open Days

13-14 September - Organised by Dept. for Communities

An Irish castle

This dramatic clifftop setting has witnessed centuries of stormy stories. From the famous – a ship from the Spanish Armada was wrecked nearby, its cannons salvaged for use in the Gatehouse. To the domestic - the castle’s own kitchens fell into the sea after a storm in 1639! (Image - Northern Ireland Environment Agency)

Dunluce Castle (County Antrim)

Star gazing

First built in 1790 this stellar site has seven movable domes. One added in 1885 showcases the modular building techniques of Howard Grubb, who delivered observatory buildings for customers across the globe. Take a tour to discover more about the architecture of telescopes!

Wales - Open Doors Days

Throughout September - Organised by CADW

A Welsh castle

Explore the ruins of Prince Llewellyn’s southern stronghold. This remote outpost protected the homeland of Gwynedd, including his vital royal cattle range. In medieval Wales, cattle were currency! Its double gatehouse with drawbridges and possibly portcullises was ahead of its time. (Image - Cadw)

Castell Y Bere (Gwynedd)

The painted church

This plain looking church is full of mysteries. It’s so old its origins have been lost to the mists of time but it must have risen to some importance in the 14th-15th centuries. Inside its walls are covered with extraordinary paintings, which were added to over the following centuries – will you spot the spear carrying skeleton?!

Scotland – Doors Open Days

Throughout September - Organised by Scottish Civic Trust with Scottish Archaeology Month

A Scottish castle

Ready to meet some Heritage Heroes? Earlier this year the first community run castle in Scotland won one of The Heritage Alliance’s coveted awards. The heroic team are holding a special open day with tours and storytelling so you can step inside to uncover centuries of intrigue and transformation. (Image - Doors Open Days)

Braemar Castle (Aberdeenshire)

Stones of the world

Hello – ‘ello – ‘lo… inside this private tomb you can experience one of the world’s longest echoes! Or just look around in stunned silence at the architectural beauty of its domed ceiling, and admire its extraordinary marble floor, featuring stones from all over the globe.

Further afield - European Heritage Days

A joint initiative by the Council of Europe & European Union.

A Dutch castle

In the 19th century Dutch captain and architect, Henri Brialmont, built 8 forts in the Netherlands, with milestones set between them. Fort 8 is one of the best preserved, including the only remaining milestone. Discover its history and the work of the Interlinie project researching it today. (Image - European Heritage Days)

Fort 8 - Hoboken (Belgium-Flanders)

A woolly world

The humble sheep takes its rightful spotlight in this exhibition. Wool has powered the economies of many European countries, binding us together or tearing us apart over the centuries as we scrabble for the gold the fleeces bring. Explore different breeds, the wool they produce and the textile techniques used from Shetland to Iceland to Norway.

A Greek castle

This 6th century fortress was probably built on the site of an even older one. It’s one of the largest castles in the Mediterranean, covering 60 acres. So make sure you’ve had your weetabix to fortify you for the architectural tour! (Image - Katsiaryna Naliuka - CC wikimedia)

Castle of Mytilene (Greece)

Closer to home - Heritage Open Days

Brought to you by the National Trust, supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, and powered by thousands of local organisations and volunteers.
