Guided tours on the corrupt election of 1880.

Electoral bribery and corruption was rife in the late 19th century. An 1880 by-election in Deal and Walmer saw it taken to unprecedented and sometimes humorous heights, leading to the result being annulled and the borough disenfranchised after a lengthy trial in the Town Hall.

This walking tour will name some of the culprits involved in giving and receiving bribes, and point out the streets and houses in which they lived.

Was your house or family one of them?

The tour will be led by Pat Wilson, who has extensively researched this fascinating event in electoral history and take about an hour.

Two identical tours are available, they start at the same place but finish in different places - see directions below for details.
