140 Years in the Making: The Architecture of The Harrogate Club
36 Victoria Avenue, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG1 5PR
Founded in 1857, The Harrogate Club has played a key role in the town’s social and business life for over 165 years. As Harrogate expanded, the Club commissioned H.E. & A. Bown in 1885 to design a purpose-built clubhouse in the prestigious Victoria Park Estate. Known for their love of curves and fine masonry, the Bown brothers created a striking building featuring distinctive curved bay windows.
Funded through six hundred £5 shares purchased by Club members, with an additional £620 loan for furnishings, construction began in 1885. The new clubhouse officially opened on 25th March 1886, marked by an afternoon tea and an evening banquet at the Queen Hotel.
