2 Vicar Road Darfield - From Corner Shop to Museum
2 Vicar Road, Darfield, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, S73 9JZ
The building at 2 Vicar Road, which is a restored Yeoman's residence, was a popular village corner shop, owned by Maurice and his partner Fred Halliday. When Maurice retired in 1977 aged 65, he closed the shop, built an extension to the rear (now the tea room), and started his collection of antiques. After his death and the will was finalised, a group of seven men set up the Darfield Area Amenity Society and began the long process of funding and converting the premises into a museum, as per Maurice's wishes. This exhibition chronicles the challenging six year journey to make this happen.
In addition to the architectural display, the museum displays some of Maurice's antiques, along with artifacts donated showing the area's long industrial and social history.
