Take a volunteer led visit inside one of Lyme's most recognisable landmarks. This special event invites you to step inside, hear stories of the people who lived and worked there, and learn about the history and legends of the iconic Cage.

For Heritage Open Day 2026, we're opening the doors to one of Lyme's most iconic landmarks.

Perched high on Lyme's moorland, The Cage is a Grade II* listed building that has stood watch over the landscape for centuries. From its elevated position, visitors can enjoy spectacular views stretching across the Cheshire Plain, towards Manchester's industrial skyline and the rolling peaks of Derbyshire.

Thought to have been built as a hunting lodge or banqueting house, The Cage has had many lives over the years. Its fascinating history includes rumoured use as a lock-up for poachers, accommodation for estate workers, and even a refuge for the Disley Home Guard during the Second World War.

Join our knowledgeable volunteers for a rare opportunity to explore this remarkable building, discover the stories behind its walls, and hear some of the legends of ghosts and secret passages that continue to surround it.

Please note: Routes to The Cage include uneven and undulating terrain. Access to the upper floors is via a narrow spiral staircase and may not be suitable for all visitors.

Opening times vary across the estate. Please visit our website for the latest information before your visit.
