Hurdwick Quarries, Devon, Tavistock., Devon, PL19 0LL

  • 21 Sep 2025
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

Discover a hidden gem of Dartmoor’s industrial past with an exclusive guided tour of Hurdwick Quarry

This is a visit to the site of the quarry (rarely open to the public) that is said to have supplied the distinctive Hurdwick stone to build Tavistock Abbey, as well as many of Tavistock's finest buildings.  As well as a walk around the quarry, there will be a talk on what Hurdwick stone is, its geology, what its properties are and where it can be found.

There will be a brief history both of this quarry and the newer Buddle quarry and speculation as to whether there were other quarries that supplied Hurdwick stone.  There will also be pictures (provided by Tavistock Photographic Club) of buildings where Hurdwick stone has been used.  Samples of the stone will be available to examine.

There will be time to admire (weather permitting) the panoramic views
