A guided walk (with pictures) round the city centre, visiting the locations of the city’s surviving and former theatres and concert halls, from travelling players to Georgian and Victorian theatres.

Hear tales from travelling players to current theatre practices via Georgian, Victorian, repertory and commercial touring Theatre.

This talk will cover the rivalry between art and religion, the decline and fall of different styles of theatre and the struggle against fire, the blitz, town planners and rival forms of entertainment. Hear about spectacular productions and great and not so great performers over the years. Charles Dickens came to Sheffield several times reading from his books (beautifully lit by his touring gas technician) and with his company of celebrated "amateurs". Learn of the progress of a small semi-professional repertory theatre via the Sheffield Playhouse to its current home art the Crucible Theatre.
