George Lord Beeforth was born in Scarborough in 1823 and lived to the remarkable age of 101, spanning five British monarchs. After his father’s death, he was educated at Scarborough Grammar School with support from Reverend Joseph Skelton. He became a successful bookseller and art gallery owner before moving to London, where he co-founded the famous Doré Gallery with James Fairless. Returning to Scarborough, he invested heavily in property development, notably the Belvedere Estate and cliff gardens. A respected civic figure, he served as Mayor of Scarborough and remained active in travel, history, and public life until his death in 1924.
Oliver Francois Xavier Sarony was born in Quebec in 1820 to Adolphus Sarony, a former Austrian officer, and Marie Louis Lehouillier. After his mother’s death and his father’s death in New York, Oliver and his brother Napoleon sought work. Oliver began trading furs before turning to photography during the rise of daguerreotypes. Arriving in Britain in 1843, he travelled as an itinerant photographer before settling in Scarborough in 1857, where he built the Gainsborough House studios. Known as an inventive showman and entrepreneur, he pioneered new photographic techniques and expanded into galleries and entertainment ventures until his death in 1879.
