A Talk about the Village of Chilworth and those who lived there

St. Denys Church, Chilworth Old Village, Chilworth, Southampton, Hampshire, SO16 7NN

The talk will mainly focus on The Fleming family, Richard Searle who rebuilt St. Denys Church in Chilworth at his own expense and the Victorian Sculptor Richard Cockle-Lucas.

Chilworth village is situated in the green gap between the swelling suburbs of Southampton to the south and Chandler's Ford to the north-east. Over the centuries Chilworth has grown from the Old Village, at the west end, which consisted of former farm workers' thatched cottages but has now been interspersed with modern houses and bungalows built in the 1950s. The village is physically split into two parts: modern Chilworth running along the straight 'new' stretch of the Southampton to Romsey road, and the Old Chilworth built around the 'old' road. Discover which families owned the land in and around Chilworth and what part did they contribute to society? If you were not a wealthy landowner what was your occupation? Also what part did the church play in the social history of the past?
