A Talk On The History of All Saints Church, Calverton
All Saints Church, Church Hill, Calverton, Buckinghamshire, MK19 6EE
An illustrated talk by David Muston. The Church of Calverton All Saints that we see today has an interesting history going back some 1400 years to Saxon times and was possibly one of the first places of Christian worship in the County. However, this talk concentrates on the medieval to the Mid-Victorian period and identifies the principal characters responsible for its rebuilding and later application of Gothic style embellishments to the exterior and Victorian internal decorative adornment for which it earned its regrading to a II* (two star) status. The talk will concentrate on the rebuilding and later campaign of improvement in terms of the architects, builders, craftsmen, artists and designers who delivered it in line with this year’s heritage theme. In particular, the materials used, their decorative qualities and specialist techniques employed to bring out their best effects, will be discussed in relation to the Chancel and Baptistry areas and the need to make best use of available daylight and then dimmer candlelight during evening services.
At the conclusion of the talk, the projection screen will be raised and the audience invited to examine the actual features close up to appreciate their outstanding qualities.
David Muston is a local historian and Chair of the Milton Keynes Heritage Association
During the earlier part of the afternoon there will be an exhibition to view, and teas and refreshments will be available curtesy of All Saints volunteers.
