Aldborough Roman Open Day

In Roman times Aldborough (then Isurium Brigantum) was the trading and administrative capital (civitas) of the north of Britannia. This event offers three must see opportunities for anyone interested about Roman life, history, local heritage & archaeology:

1. Explore the English Heritage 'Aldborough Roman Town' site and its fascinating museum (normally only open on Sundays and third Fridays of each month).

2. Explore the Roman Garden at Aldborough which has been created and developed by members of The Friends of Roman Aldborough (FORA). This will provide insights into Romans' dietary and healing practices.

3. Witness an active archaeological dig involving a long-standing collaboration between the local community, FORA and the University of Cambridge. This year the excavation will focus on a unique area of the site where the, so called, 'Helicon Mosaic' was discovered by antiquarians in 1846. By the date of this event there should be plenty to see.

This event will complement close by Aldborough Church Open Day . St Andrew's Church is a 14th century Grade 1 listed church on the site of the Roman forum and contains Roman stonework and a unique Roman sculpture.

Accessibility details

Cars can be parked in the grass field opposite Aldborough Manor (a large white building) on Low Road. The field is rough ground, please wear suitable footwear and take care when you are walking over it. Parking elsewhere in the village is limited, but if you do so please park considerately. There is no level access to the site and it is unsuitable for wheelchairs. The visit involves a circular route involving steps and walking over rough ground. Suitable footwear is recommended.
