Grade 11* Listed Church

The 10th century church of All Saints is the parish church for Freshwater. It is situated in the old village area near the River Yar and The Causeway. The Afton and Compton Chapels are named after local Norman landholding families. The neighbouring Red Lion pub is linked to the church with a story that a rector of All Saints was imprisoned having been reported for making derogatory remarks about Oliver Cromwell. As well as being closely linked to Alfred, Lord Tennyson and his family, All Saints church has a close connection to Robert Hooke, the English polymath, who was one of the leading scientists and architects of Restoration England, since his father was Curate of freshwater and lived in Hooke Hill. The congregation of All Saints is called to services by the peals of the six bells in the bell tower, and the services enhanced by the organ or church band. All Saints is surrounded by the largest churchyard on the Isle of Wight at over 5.5 acres. It contains many interesting tombs and graves, including that of the Tennyson family and several War Commission graves.
