Alverstoke Crescent Garden - history & botanical tour
Crescent Garden, Crescent Road, Alverstoke, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 2BB
Alverstoke Crescent Garden historical and botanical tour of the garden will be a delight for history buffs & gardeners alike...
The history TALK will cover the entrepreneur, Robert Cruikshank, who envisaged the setting up of Angleseyville; and the architect, Thomas Ellis Owen, who designed The Crescent and many other houses in Gosport, Southsea and Portsmouth in the late regency period. It will provide an insight into the grandeur of the resort and the events that were planned. You'll hear reasons why it went into decline.
It shares the story of how the Garden was saved and will look to the present-day when the Garden is maintained by a team of local volunteers, with shared management by the Friends of Crescent Garden and Gosport Borough Council, and how the cost of the upkeep is now met by a membership scheme and fundraising activities, which take place throughout the year.
The TOUR will cover the heritage trees, shrubs and plants, identifying when they were introduced into Britain or whether they are British native plants. Today the Garden is looked after by a volunteer team, ‘the Green Team’, who meet every Wednesday morning to plant, prune and tend the garden come rain or shine.
Perhaps you could bring a picnic and take time to enjoy the garden on your own after the tour?
New volunteers are always welcome.
