Dean Road Cemetery, Dean Road, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, YO12 7SN
Dean Road cemetery, which opened in 1857, was designed by J P Pritchett and Sons a practice which was one of the foremost specialists in the design of cemeteries at the time. It is also the burial place of several people such as architects, engineers and builders, who were influential in the development of 19th century Scarborough.
Historic buildings specialist, Chris Hall will start the guided walk with a look the history and the architecture of the cemetery and its buildings. He will then guide us round some significant memorials to architects, engineers and builders. If time allows, the tour will then pass through into Manor Road cemetery, laid out in 1870 in a very different way by Leonard Thompson, and look at some more memorials. In this area we will look at buildings by the highly regarded local architect Frank Tugwell, heavily influenced by the Arts & Crafts movement
