AudaTours Harrogate Audio Tour: Taking the Waters
Tewit Well, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG1 2RR
Follow a self-guided audio walk from Tewit Well through the streets, parkland and spa buildings of Harrogate, listening as you go and pausing at 11 stops including the Royal Pump Room, the Royal Baths, the Old Swan, the Crescent, Valley Gardens and the Old Magnesia Well Pump Room.
The route takes about 1 hour of audio and around 2 hours in total including walking.
It begins with the town’s first spring and traces the people who made the spa business work: the dippers and bath attendants who served the waters, the bath-chair pushers who moved visitors uphill, the pastry cooks and Swiss confectioners who catered for them, and the engineers and benefactors who helped shape the town’s spa landscape. Harrogate’s version of the story is unusual for the range of working lives it brings into view. You hear about the dipper elected Queen of the Wells, the Swiss pastry cook who arrived at King’s Cross unsure of his destination, the iron-forging benefactor who became one of the town’s great names, the first park superintendent who shaped Valley Gardens, and the banjo player who spotted a famous novelist sitting under a borrowed name.
