A self-guided audio tour of Liverpool, exploring the working life beneath the Liver Birds: dock gates, clerks' floors, sailors' homes, strike grounds and the streets that built the port.

Follow this self-guided audio route with headphones and the app as you walk 15 stops from Welcome to Liverpool City Centre to the Philharmonic Dining Rooms. It takes about 1 hour of audio, or around 3 hours total including the walk.

The route begins at the Church of Our Lady and St Nicholas and leads through a city centre shaped by wages, shifting labour and port traffic: the Cotton Exchange on Old Hall Street, the Royal Liver and Cunard buildings, the Albert Dock warehouses, the Sailors' Home gate at Canning Place, the Bluecoat, the Cavern at lunchtime, Walker Art Gallery, St George's Hall, Lewis's, the Metropolitan Cathedral and, finally, a pub built for wage-earners. Liverpool's story here is not the merchant façade but the working day beneath it: dock pens, clerks' floors, sailors' shelter, strike ground, and the people whose labour fed and dressed half the world.
