Back to the Barracks: Hat Making Workshop and Demonstrations
The Art Studio, 5-7 Barracks Square, Newcastle, Staffordshire, ST5 1LG
Newcastle-under-Lyme has a long history of hat making dating back over 300 years.
Join contemporary Felt Hat Maker Holly Johnson at The Barracks for a live hat making demonstration and family-friendly hat crafting activity.
You’ll be able to browse Holly's hat making materials and equipment, have a go at steaming and shaping a felt hat crown, or just chat and ask questions about how traditional felt-blocked hats are made. She will have a selection of her handmade pieces for you to look at and try on too.
Holly will be joined by local circus performer and artist Eve Travis, who will both help you to create your own cardboard and fabric decorated hat to wear about town and take home.
We'll have some pre-made bases to decorate or make your own from scratch, adding fabric, paint, ribbons, wire, 3D paper shapes, flowers and more. Explore lots of simple millinery methods and materials to make your own unique headwear.
The activity is free to attend. All materials provided. Suitable for all ages.
