Discover a 1698 Baptist chapel, the oldest in Yorkshire still in use, Applegarth lane, Bridlington, East Yorkshire.

In 1680, a man was rescued from the sea; he had lost his ship, crew and cargo on a voyage from London to Scotland. He didn't seem very concerned by his losses; he explained to Robert Prudom that it was God's will and God would provide for his future because he was a Baptist. Robert Prudom (the Chief Lord of Bridlington) was so impressed by what he was told and was also seeking a new religion to follow. Robert Prudom then travelled to London and became an ordained Baptist minister; he built a secret chapel on his own land on Applegarth lane.

The 1698 Baptist Chapel and graveyard is the oldest still in use in Yorkshire and is open both weekends of the Heritage Open Days festival. David (a present day, Lord Feoffee) and a local historian has taken care of the chapel for many years, has opened it to visitors for the last 42 years and invites you to come and visit it.

The site is dog friendly. They may also be live music for you to enjoy.
