Beauchief Abbey

The Abbey was founded in the 12th Century and is dedicated to Thomas a Becket of Canterbury. Beauchief belonged to the Premonstratensian Order whose members were Canons. It was dissolved by the Commissioners of Henry VIII in 1536. During the 1670s a small chapel was added to the medieval Tower. Weekly Church of England Services are held to this day in the original chapel.

Visitors can see the original Medieval Tower, the 17th century Chapel with its original box pews and the remains of the old monastery cloisters and fishponds. Lots to see in and around the site and learn more about the Christian traditions and lives that have been practised at Beauchief since the 1170s. The Abbey was gifted to the people of Sheffield in 1932 is Grade II Listed and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and thought to be the Oldest Building in Sheffield still in use.

Visitors are welcome to join us for the Heritage Evensong after HODs on Sunday, 20th September, at 1500 - 1600. Evensong draws its origins from the sung services of monastic communities in the early centuries of the church’s life. The Canons at Beauchief Abbey would have held a service of Compline with many elements similar to the 1662 BCP service of Evensong that we use in the Abbey today.

Sunday 20 September:

1100-1500, followed by Evensong until 1600.

Directions:

From the A621 (Abbeydale Road South) travelling out of town from Sheffield City Centre for approx. 3.5 until you reach Abbey Lane Cross Roads (after Millhouses Park ). Turn left at Beauchief Traffic lights onto Abbey Lane, straight on and take the 2nd Right turn into Beauchief Abbey Lane (sign posted Beauchief Abbey) Parking is on Beauchief Abbey Lane.

Ramp into Abbey - access to floor and Nave but not pews. Suitable footwear recommended as some areas are uneven

Parking is on Beauchief Abbey Lane or the service road on Abbey Lane. Visitors are also welcome to join us for Heritage Evensong at 1500 - a service that has been part of our Heritage for hundreds of years. TBC Choral Evensong with the Choir of St James Norton.
