  • Multiple dates available
  • | In person
  • | Pre-booking required
  • | Walk / Tour

Join our site manager on a tour behind the scenes at Berwick Barracks to see building progress on this historic building as it is transformed into new museum and cultural spaces for the town.

This is a rare opportunity to see the renovation and conservation work being carried out to maintain this important part of Berwick's built heritage for future generations. Tours will last approximately 30 minutes. Hard hats and hi-vis vest will be available, but participants must wear stout footwear. Suitable for age 12 and over.

Berwick Barracks is a Grade 1 listed building and is one of the first purpose built structures of this kind to be built in England. They were opened in 1721, much to the delight of the local townspeople who had to accommodate the soldiers prior to this. T

The Living Barracks Project is a partnership between English Heritage, The Maltings (Berwick) Trust, Kings Own Scottish Borderers, Northumberland County Council and BBHT. It is breathing new life into Berwick’s historic Barracks, restoring their place at the heart of the town’s cultural and community life. Ahead of the site’s full reopening in 2028, an inspiring programme of art, heritage and community projects is already unfolding - created with and for the people of Berwick, thanks to the generous support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the UK Government’s Cultural Development Fund. Together, we’re rediscovering what the Barracks have been, will be and could become.
