Behind the Scenes with Towner!

Join us for three days of free heritage-related events at Towner Eastbourne, including an opportunity to get hands-on with curating the Eastbourne Theatres archive (Saturday 13th September). The programme will also include heritage talks from local groups, behind-the-scenes tours at Towner and screenings of vintage film footage of Eastbourne, from Screen Archive South East. Heritage Open Days at Towner: Talk - The Van Lier Family and the Grand Hotel
Helen Warren (Family Roots) will explore the poignant history of the Van Lier Family. Simon Van Lier was the leader of the orchestra at the Grand Hotel, his wife Flora Manheim played the viola. Before their marriage Flora ran an all-women viola band! In the 1930s Flora and their three daughters went to Amsterdam where they later were part of the Nazi resistance. Being Jewish, Flora and 2 daughters were imprisoned weree Flora later died . A sad but poignant tale. Helen has researched Flora and her daughter Beatrice as part of Wayfinder Woman's Women of Eastbourne project. Tickets free but bookable via Towner www.townereastbourne.org.uk/whats-on
