Bridgeland Street Heritage Day - Lavington United Reformed Church

Lavington United Reformed Church traces its history back to 1641 when an Independent Congregation was formed under the leadership of Revd William Bartlett. The Great Meeting Chapel building on Bridgeland Street was demolished by the Victorians in order to erect the current building with two spires. Inside you can see the original pews each one numbered and with doors. The magnificent pipe organ was built originally by William Sweetland of Bath in 1863 and later enlarged by Vowles of Bristol around 1900. The pipe organ will be played for the 2026 heritage day but it is awaiting an overhaul by our organ tuner - next year it should sound even better. On the day you will find displays explaining more about the history of the church and its significance in the non-conformist tradition. Members of the church congregation will be on hand to show you round and answer any questions.
