A charming medieval manor house set within the largest orchard cared for by the National Trust, Brockhampton boasts over 600 years of history and 1,700 acres of woodland, parkland and farmland, making for the perfect day out this Heritage Open Day.

Head through the lopsided gatehouse and travel through time inside the 14th century moated manor house, where each room tells of a different era in Brockhampton’s history, from the medieval Great Hall to the 1950s Freegard lounge.

The orchard surrounding the manor house is made up of Shropshire Prune damson trees, and continuing along the hard-standing accessible paths will lead you through heritage apple, quince, and pear trees up to the apple-core and reimagined orchards. It is here that you’ll find an abundance of young fruit trees, the natural play trail, and the ‘Hereford Bull’ trow, a cargo boat which sailed in Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee pageant.

If you are feeling adventurous, follow one of the way-marked walks out into the wider estate and enjoy all that Brockhampton has to offer, from wooded valleys and streams to open parkland. After a busy day of exploring don’t forget to stop by the Granary Kiosk for some light refreshments, cold drinks and freshly made hot beverages. You may also discover a new favourite read in the second-hand bookshop stocked with a range of quality second-hand books and DVDs.
