Built in 1720, Nikolaus Pevsner said that Brownston House is ‘the best house in Devizes’. The house was built for Francis Merewether of Devizes and Easterton, who was was Member of Parliament for Devizes in 1701 and again from 1703 to 1705.

A Grade 1 listed building with two storeys, an attic and a basement. the house has a wide front divided into three main parts and is symmetrical, except for additional bay extension on the left. The house has a long history having been home to several Devizes MPs as well as being a Ladies Boarding School from 1859 to 1901. More recently, it was a nurses’ hostel and a doctor’s surgery. It is now owned by the Renelec Group and is used as offices.
