Burgh House Trust, Burgh House, New End Square, London, Greater London, NW3 1LT
Join an introductory tour of Burgh House on the hour and on the half hour to discover more about this wonderful Grade I listed property. Built in 1704 and 1720, Burgh House is aQueen Anne and early Georgian house situated in the heart of Hampstead Village. Its creation and earliest residents reflected the Hampstead of its time – first built by a family of haberdashers from the City, then extended by a doctor promoting the growing Hampstead Wells Spa and mineral waters. Burgh House remained primarily a private residence until the mid 20th century, and in 1946 it became a community centre for Hampstead Borough Council.
Eventually the council closed Burgh House, being expensive to maintain and no longer fit for purpose. In 1979, a group of local residents saved the House by creating a Trust and leasing it. This Trust undertook many structural repairs with substantial local support, and made Burgh House again a vital centre for the community.
Today Burgh House remains true to that community spirit as an independent, self-funding charity for this dynamic historic house, museum, art gallery, which is also a public and private events venue. Here people from near and far can discover the rich heritage of Hampstead through our changing exhibitions and displays, and view the beautiful House itself.
