Calverton All Saint Church & Bell Tower Open Day & Guided Architectural Walk & Talk
All Saints Church, Church Hill, Calverton, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, MK19 6EE
The morning guided walk will compare the various architectural styles within the Calverton Conservation area from Tudor, through Georgian with Gothic detailing, via late Regency to the simpler vernacular of the earlier thatched cottages. The 1hr walk starts from the south porch of the church at 11.00 and is just over 1mile with two stiles to cross. The ground is a rough meadow, so sensible shoes are advised, particularly if wet.
This overview will be complemented by an illustrated talk in the afternoon concentrating on the Grade II* listed church itself, which has gone through several building phases and campaigns of improvements, including the decorative embellishments to the Chancel interior by the local architect Edward Swinfen-Harris during the early 1870s.
Those keen to tackle the spiral stair will be rewarded by a magnificent view of the local countryside from the top of the church tower of some of Buckinghamshire’s best-preserved ridge and furrow in the fields which surround the village. There will be displays in the ringing room describing the upgrading of Calverton’s bells from the original six to a full octave peal of eight new and recast bells. The bells themselves can be seen in relation to their original wooden bell frame and the new metal frame belfry inserted into the ‘spare’ storey of the tower during the upgrade works in 2018.
