Calverton All Saints Church Open Day
All Saints Church, Church Hill, Calverton, Buckinghamshire, MK19 6EE
Calverton All Saints Church is a Grade II* listed building of outstanding quality showing a variety of highly interesting work from the late Middle Ages to the mid-Victorian period. The Victorian decorative scheme in the chancel and in the stained-glass windows is of considerable importance. The interior will have additional lighting to bring out the finer detail and information panels describing the key features. There will be a further exhibition based on this year’s heritage theme of everyday histories of working lives.
All this, within a beautiful setting and well-kept church yard populated by magnificent specimen mature trees.
Those keen to tackle the spiral stair will be rewarded by a magnificent view of the local countryside from the top of the church tower of some of Buckinghamshire’s best-preserved ridge and furrow in the fields which surrounds the village. There will be displays in the ringing room describing the upgrading of Calverton’s bells from the original six to a full octave peal of eight new and recast bells. The bells themselves can be seen in relation to their original wooden bell frame and the new metal frame belfry inserted into the ‘spare’ story of the tower during the upgrade works in 2018.
Modestly priced hot and cold drinks, hot sausage rolls, and a variety of cakes will be available curtesy of All Saints volunteers, who will set tables in the church and outside too if the weather is fine.
