Celebrate the Heritage of Smallford Station
Smallford Station is a unique Grade II Listed building, believed to be the last surviving wooden station built by the Great Northern Railway (GNR). Opened over 160 years ago on the Hatfield and St Albans Railway, it's a rare reminder of our rich railway heritage.

The former railway track-bed is now The Alban Way, a popular walking and cycling route between Hatfield and St Albans, with Smallford Station at its heart.

Since 2013, our dedicated volunteers have researched the history of the station, the railway and the communities they served. We enjoy sharing what we've discovered through exhibitions, talks, publications, our website, Facebook group and Heritage Open Days.

Join us as we celebrate:
• The 161st anniversary of the Hatfield and St Albans Railway.
• The people who have shaped the history of the railway and Smallford Station.
• The completion of our Smallford Station Environment Improvement Project, delivered with St Albans City and District Council and Oaklands College.
• Our exciting new chapter as a Charitable Trust.

Join a Guided walk along a short part of the former railway line - starting at 12 noon and 2 pm.

Please note: Unfortunately, access to the station building/former ticket office is not available.

Directions:

Station Yard is just off Station Road close to the hump back bridge that traverses the original railway line. Station Road/Smallford Lane runs between the A1057 @ Smallford (the road from Hatfield to St Albans) and the A414 North Orbital Road @ Sleapshyde (access from the A1(M) and M1).

Accessibility details

The nearest toilets are 5-10 minutes walk. There is no access to the station ticket office. Parking is available on Station Approach.

We're a very warm and friendly group! You'll be able to – • see an exhibition illustrating much of the history of the railway and our station • see a presentation showing some of the many people who contributed its development and use • come inside our refurbished goods van body and view our collection of artefacts • take part in a guided walk to Nast Hyde and back (about 3 miles in total) • enjoy some delicious homemade cakes and pastries
