Celebrating the History of Smallford Station and the Hatfield & St Albans Railway
Smallford Station Car Park, Station Approach, Station Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire, AL4 0HF
*Please note the change of event date to 21st September*
Smallford Station is a unique, 150-year-old Grade 2 Listed building that served the Hatfield and St Albans Railway. The original track-bed is now The Alban Way, a very popular foot- and cycle-path that runs between Hatfield & St Albans. Smallford is located midway along this route.
Since 2013, a group of enthusiastic volunteers with a wide range of interests, knowledge and skills (around local history and heritage, railways, nature, walking, cycling…) have been researching the history of the Station and Railway and the influence they had on surrounding communities.
We will be celebrating –
• The 160th anniversary of the opening of the Hatfield & St Albans Railway
• Our Project to Improve the Environment around Smallford Station, undertaken in collaboration with St Albans District Council and our local Oaklands College
• 6 brand new railway posters designed by local artists
• Becoming a Charitable Trust
Enjoy our popular -
* Pop-Up Café providing delicious homemade cakes & pastries with hot/cold drinks in a warm & friendly atmosphere
* Guided Walks - at 12 noon & 2pm - suitable for people of all ages, including disabled: the footpath is tarmacked and level.
We delight in sharing what we're doing and what we've learnt - through our email circulation list, giving presentations, our exhibition, publications, our Facebook Group and website - and through participating in Heritage Open Days.
PLEASE NOTE: Unfortunately we do not have access to the station ticket office.

Each Free Guided Walk is around an hour: We will run two guided walks between Smallford Station & Nast Hyde Halt (about a mile away) - at 12 noon and 2.00pm. These will be suitable for everyone, including wheelchair-bound - the footpath is fully tarmacked and fairly level. There are no toilets on site: the nearest ones are about 5 minutes walk - in Smallford and Sleapshyde.
Visitors will find us a very warm, welcoming and friendly crew!! They'll have access to the car park, platform and the Alban Way foot- & cycle- path that runs alongside the station. They can see the original station ticket office building but, unfortunately, we do not have access to it.
