St Albans Clock Tower
The Clock Tower, Market Place, St Albans, Hertfordshire, AL3 5DR
Climb the 93 steps of the spiral stone staircase to the top of the only medieval town belfry in England and enjoy the magnificent views of the Cathedral, the historic city of St Albans and the beauty of the surrounding countryside.
Stop off in to the clock room to see the working Victorian turret clock mechanism, with its 7ft pendulum and step in to the belfry and admire the medieval bell, Gabriel, which is still rung every hour on the hour. But don't stand too close when it is chiming as it is really loud!
Enjoy the first-floor display, “Grotesques, vaults and a cockerel - the fascinating architecture of the St Albans Clock Tower". Enter the Dial Room on the third floor, which is only opened to the public on Heritage Open Days, between 1030 and 1300 on Sunday, 21st September.
Vote in our poll in the entrance room - "Which is your favourite building in St Albans?"
Play "Hunt the Golden Keys", throughout the weekend. Children will have the chance to win a bag of chocolate coins by playing “Hunt the Golden Keys”. Golden keys will be hidden throughout the Clock Tower for the children to find.
