Celebrating the History of Smallford Station and the Hatfield & St Albans Railway
Smallford Station Car Park, Station Approach, Station Road, St Albans, Hertfordshire, AL4 0HF
Smallford Station is a unique, 150-year-old Grade 2 Listed building that served the Hatfield and St Albans Railway. The original track-bed is now The Alban Way, a very popular foot- and cycle-path that runs between Hatfield & St Albans. Smallford is located midway along this route.
Since 2013, a group of enthusiastic volunteers with a wide range of interests, knowledge and skills (around local history and heritage, railways, nature, walking, cycling…) have been researching the history of the Station and Railway and the influence they had on surrounding communities.
We will be celebrating –
• The completion of our Project, to Improve the Environment around Smallford Station, undertaken in collaboration with St Albans District Council and staff/students from our local Oaklands College
• The 160th anniversary of the opening of the Hatfield & St Albans Railway
• Becoming a Charitable Trust!
Enjoy our popular -
* Pop-Up Café providing delicious homemade cakes and pastries with hot/cold drinks in a warm and friendly environment
* Guided Walks - at 12 noon and 2pm - suitable to people of all ages, including disabled: the footpath is tarmacked and level.
We delight in sharing what we're doing and what we've learnt - through our email circulation list, giving presentations, our exhibition, some publications, our Facebook Group and website - and through participating in Heritage Open Days.
PLEASE NOTE: Unfortunately we do not have access to the station building/ticket office.

Each Free Guided Walk is around an hour: We will run two guided walks between Smallford Station & Nast Hyde Halt (less than a mile away) - at 12 noon and 2.00pm. These will be suitable for everyone, including wheelchair-bound - the footpath is fully tarmacked and fairly level.
Unfortunately, at this point of time, we do not have access/entrance to the original Smallford Station Ticket Office Building.
