Celebrating Wensum Lodge. A legacy of Adult Education

The Archive Centre, Martineau Lane, Norwich, Norfolk, NR1 2DQ

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

Exhibition relating the story of Wensum Lodge and its importance as a centre for adult education across an enormous range of subjects from its start in 1966 to closure at the end of 2023.

Displays, posters and videos describe some of the 300+ courses offered at Wensum Lodge ranging from Greek to boat building. Wardens Brenda and Ken Davis with the support of Friends of Wensum Lodge oversaw the conversion of the old brewery buildings to create spaces that promoted arts and crafts, cultural activities and sport. Some courses enabled students to progress to new careers. Jurnet’s Bar is remembered beginning with the rediscovery of the ancient Music House cellars by early hostel students and their development as a popular music venue. Sadly, the Lodge closed at the end of 2023 but was purchased in May 2025 by new owners who wish to restore the buildings and develop a creative centre. The Music House is separate to this development and its future is still uncertain.
