Central Library and Archives Heritage Tours

The tour will guide you through both modern and historic libraries, exploring their history throughout the decades since the library first opened in 1860. Guests will be guided though the main library space, the Picton Reading Room, the Hornby Library and the Oak Room. There will also be an opportunity to visit the archive search room to see collections relating to William Brown Street and surrounding area, as well as some of the treasures from our Special Collections. The tour will also include a behind-the-scenes visit to our conservation studio, housed within Central Library, to learn more about how we look after our collections. There will also be a chance to view be photographs and items belonging to photographer E. Chambré Hardman from the National Trust property Hardmans’ House on Rodney Street.
Tours will be held at the following dates and times:
Saturday 13th September: 10:00am; 12:00pm; 2:00pm
Saturday 20th September: 10:00am; 12:00pm; 2:00pm
Tickets are free, but must be booked in advance via Eventbrite up to 24-hours before the tour date.
Please arrive at the library main entrance 15 minutes before the tour begins.
There is a maximum of 25 persons per tour, and a 6 ticket maximum per group/family.
The tours will be fully accessible to guests. Lifts are available between floors if guests prefer not to use the stairs.
Tours are approximately 90 minutes long.
