Charlton Church St Peter and St Paul
St Alphege Road, Charlton, Dover, Kent, CT16 2PU
An exhibition will focus on the life and work of James Brooks, the influential architect who designed Charlton Church. Wander around the church and admire the beauty, grandeur and simplicity of Brooks' design. Music will be played, enabling you to experience the building's remarkable acoustics while you sip a refreshing drink.
James Brooks, 1825-1901, Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, designed St Peter & St Paul, Charlton Church, in the last decade of a life in which he had firmly established himself as a leading ecclesiastical architect. The church was designed for high Anglicanism, for which its first incumbent, Fr Sidney Faithorn Green, had gained notoriety. Brooks donated the beautiful high altar at Charlton in memory of his wife - that in itself makes a visit to Charlton worthwhile.
He designed few secular buildings: an exception was the South Eastern Hotel at Deal in Kent.
Brooks was awarded the Royal Institute of British Architects' Royal Gold Medal in 1895.
This exhibition will look at his life and works, and will include beautiful photographs of the Dover church so lovingly designed in all its detail. Brooks was influential in the English Gothic Revival: pictures of other Brooks churches will also be displayed.
The exhibition will remain in place for a month, enabling visitors and concert audiences to see it when the church is open. Please contact the organiser if you wish to visit the church to see the exhibition at other times.
