Opened in 1881 the Grade II*-listed Church of St Alban the Martyr is normally only open for church services.
Look round at your own pace with guide cards and leaflets; tours if a volunteer guide is available.
Free leaflets are available for a heritage trail around the parish of 1.2, 1.6 or 2 miles (2, 2.6 or 3.2 km).
We are offering five free illustrated talks:
Saturday 13th September: The stained-glass featuring the magnificent clerestory windows above the high Altar by Henry Payne and Sidney Meteyard, Victorian Glass by John Hardman and Clayton & Bell, a late Morris & Co window and two windows by Frank Albert Smallpiece.
Monday 15th September: The founding St Alban’s Church through the mission of brothers James and Thomas Pollock;
Wednesday 17th September: The building of St Alban's Church, featuring architect John Loughborough Pearson's drawings;
Friday 19th September: The altarpiece by Birmingham artists Kate and Myra Bunce, with Kate's own description of the iconography;
Saturday 20th September: The theology of the 'Ritualist' Pollock Brothers, authors of "Gospel Words", "The Daily Round", "The Morrow after the Sabbath" etc.
Toilets are available, including a wheelchair-friendly one. The main entrance is up steps from Stanhope Street, but step-free access to the church is available via a path beside the church from a gate on Stanhope Street.
No admission charge; but donations for church restoration and organ fund welcome.
