Visit ClayLife Pottery within the historic old post office that's been converted into a working community pottery; where you can ask questions about pottery from artisan crafters and observe real time pottery activities. Have a go yourself?!

Have you ever wondered how your pottery at home gets made, or are you a fan of the Pottery Throwdown and want to give it a go yourself? Now's your chance.

Come on down to ClayLife Pottery, situated within the historic walls of the old post office and discover a place where creativity comes to life. Artisan crafters will be on hand to answer all your questions, from the different types of clays, where they come from and the different ways they need to be handled. You can even ask specific questions, like how long it takes to make a tea-cup. Every piece is handmade and will always be unique.

You can even get your hands on some of our raw clay and become a potter yourself. Try your hand at pulling and shaping clay, and for children there will be some fast-drying clay which they can shape and take home as a keepsake.

There is a long history of terracotta pottery in Appleby-in-Westmorland and the surrounding areas, dating back to the medieval period, and it was once the main source of employment in the area. Discover the stories of the past and how the pottery industry shaped the local landscape.
