Cricketer & Stockinger: A Display Exploring the Relationship between Cricket and Framework Knitting in Nottinghamshire

Professional cricket from the mid-nineteenth century to the outbreak of the First World War was dominated by Nottinghamshire men, largely due to the prevalence of framework knitters or stockingers, as they were commonly known.
Whilst framework knitters were busy in their roles, their occupation largely took place in their own homes with hours they could organise themselves. Time away from the frame largely mean playing cricket, resulting in a large number of stockingers becoming professional players.
For Heritage Open Days 2026 and the theme of ‘Everyday Histories’, Trent Bridge, the home of Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club and the Framework Knitters Museum in Ruddington have partnered up to create a display exploring this unique relationship between sport and knitting.
The display will be on view in the Chapel Gallery of the Framework Knitters Museum from 17th September to 10th October 2026.
