Danny House
Danny House, New Way Lane, Hurstpierpoint, Hassocks, West Sussex, BN6 9BB
Danny House is a grand Grade I listed Elizabethan mansion near Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex. Built between 1593 and 1595 by George Goring, it features classic Elizabethan architecture, including a striking east frontage and a three-story south façade. The name “Danny” originates from the Saxon term “Danehithe,” meaning "Valley and Haven." The estate’s history dates back to the Domesday Book, where it was recorded as belonging to Robert de Pierpoint under William de Warenne. Originally a hunting lodge, the current mansion was designed in an “E” shape in honor of Queen Elizabeth I.
Over the centuries, the estate changed hands multiple times. In 1650, it was sold to Peter Courthope and later became the home of the Campion family in the 18th century, who made significant alterations, including re-fronting the south side. Danny House played a pivotal role in World War I when Prime Minister Lloyd George rented it in 1918. Here, the Imperial War Cabinet met in the Great Hall and agreed on the Armistice terms that ended the war.
Following various uses, including as a school, Danny House became a retirement home in 1956. Today, under the stewardship of Richard Burrows, it offers luxurious serviced apartments for retirees. The mansion is surrounded by historic gardens, parkland with ancient oak trees, and a lake. Featured on Channel 5’s *The World’s Most Luxurious Retirement Homes*, Danny House remains a remarkable fusion of history and modern living.
