The Past Lives of a Jewellery Workshop: A Unique Tour of Pruden and Smith's Workshop and Gallery
2 South Street, Ditchling, East Sussex, BN6 8UQ
In celebration of the Heritage Open Days 2025 theme of Architecture, this unique tour will focus on the diverse history of Pruden and Smith's Victorian gallery and workshop building.
2 South Street Ditchling has had many uses during its lifetime, built on the site of the former poor house, it has been everything from a butcher’s shop to an Arts and Crafts printing press. During your tour you will learn the story behind clues to the building’s history such as the decorative grills above the windows; discover what exhibit from Ditchling Museum of Art and Craft used to be housed in the now workshop area; and see contemporary goldsmiths at work handcrafting Pruden and Smith’s Sussex landscape inspired designs in recycled gold and platinum.
For this year’s festival, Pruden and Smith will also be hosting an exhibition of Jewellery by a guest maker, Susan Jane Dunford. Suzy has been working with Pruden and Smith since 2010 and currently lives near San Francisco where she works remotely co-ordinating Pruden and Smith’s annual events such as Art in Ditchling.
Her jewellery is inspired by architecture and features miniature silver designs that represent iconic building types from the English landscape, including a beach hut, a lighthouse, and even a tiny birdhouse!
