Through thorough research, careful observation and detailed draughtsmanship, Wainwright records the character of Darwen’s built environment — its mills, commercial buildings, places of worship and the less noticed architectural details that together tell the story of the town.
The route from Mill Gap towards Duckworth Street offers a glimpse into everyday life in 1930s Darwen. These drawings invite us to pause and imagine the people who lived and worked here, noticing how buildings, doorways, windows, and street frontages formed part of the routines and rhythms of everyday life.
Wainwright’s work is both a visual record and an act of remembrance. By drawing these buildings, he preserves something of their individual character and encourages us to consider how the town has developed, and what remains of its architectural past.
From Mill Gap to Duckworth Street is an invitation to see Darwen anew — to walk the streets with fresh eyes and discover the stories told by its buildings.
