Dean Heritage Centre is a popular museum and visitor attraction, but the history of the buildings is often overlooked. As the theme is architecture this year, we will be sharing our knowledge of the site with our visitors. What are the buildings that make up what is now the Dean Heritage Centre? How old are they? What industry has gone on here for hundreds of years?
Dean Heritage Centre is a Grade II listed site that was an Iron Forge in the 1600s, iron foundry early 1800s, corn mill late 1800s, leather board factory late 1800s to early 1900s, saw mill mid 1900s, scrap metal yard 1960s/70s and Dean Heritage Centre 1980s onwards. Come in for free on our Heritage Open Day, walk around, see the buildings, see displays on Dean industries and find out about the history of the site. Additional information
The whole site includes the Gruffalo Trail for children. The pond feeds the waterwheel which provides electrical power.
